Lafayette provides students with opportunities to express themselves positively through visual arts, music, and performing arts. We incorporate art and the process of art making as a form of expression and a non-verbal opportunity to reflect feelings. Weekly art therapy groups focus on group process and provide opportunities for creativity, expression of feelings, development of social skills, and building of self-esteem.
Individual art therapy also provides a therapeutic outlet, encourages the development of specific art skills, aids in the assessment of a student’s developmental level and/or symptoms related to emotional or behavioral problems. A wide variety of media is available for art therapy at Lafayette, including paint, oil and chalk pastels, graphite, watercolor, tempera, acrylic, clay, paper sculpture, etc.
Lafayette would like to thank the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation for the recent grant to help support the LS Art Therapy Program.
